Biography

Hailing from the South Wales Valleys, Emyr is an Opera graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD). Studying with Eric Roberts and Michael Pollock, roles have included Collatinus The Rape of Lucretia, Minskman Flight, Papageno The Magic Flute, Don Alfonso Così fan tutte, Sid Albert Herring, Forrester The Cunning Little Vixen, Figaro Le nozze di Figaro (all for RWCMD) Ben Benny/cover Hel Helson Paul Bunyan (Welsh National Youth Opera), Benoit/Alcindoro La bohème, Schelkalov/Boyar Khruschov Boris Godunov, Henry Cuffe Gloriana (St. Endellion Opera Festival, Cornwall), Contractor/Cynllunydd Gair ar Gnawd (S4C), and Cover Nana/Starkey Peter Pan (Welsh National Opera) being awarded an Independent Young Opera Artist Award in the process.

In the summer of 2016, Emyr performed the title role in the RWCMD’s production of Verdi’s Falstaff conducted by Carlo Rizzi, before performing with the Hallé Orchestra in a Somme Commemoration Concert. Following from a performance earlier in the year of Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music at Birmingham Symphony Hall with the CBSO, and as a guest on Radio 3’s In Tune, and in a number of functions for HRH Prince of Wales.

Emyr has recently won the prestigious Ian Stoutzker Prize at RWCMD for the most outstanding musician, and received the Principles Prize for his commitment and effort throughout his time as a student at the college. Emyr is a RWCMD HRH Prince of Wales Scholar, Dame Shirley Bassey Scholar, and received the David and Phillipa Seligman Award for Excellence. He has also won the 2015 MOCSA Young Welsh Singer of the Year Award, 2015 Bruce Millar Gulliver Opera Prize, Lee Freeman Memorial Prize, and the 2013 Ffresh Young Actor Award.

Autumn 2016 sees Emyr perform with Independent Opera in their production of Simplicius Simplicissimus at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London.
