Biography

John has developed a reputation as a singer with considerable stage presence. Recent engagements included operatic roles with Opera North, Opera Holland Park and Scottish Opera, Wigmore and Purcell Room recitals, and works with contemporary music ensembles internationally. He was the recipient of the a Musicians’ Company Concordia Foundation Wigmore Prize.

On the concert platform he made his Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room debuts as a Park Lane Young Artist in 2011 and 2012 with pianist James Young, with programmes that included works by Debussy, Poulenc, Wolf, Quilter, and new works by Edwin Roxburgh and Phillip Grange. Other concert and oratorio includes Messiah at the Bridgewater Hall, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall; In terra pax and Fantasia on Christmas Carols for the Bath Phil; The Magic of G&S at The National Concert Hall, Dublin; Elijah; Haydn’s The Seasons; Bach’s B Minor Mass and the Christmas Oratorio.
As a lover of contemporary music, John has performed Peter Maxwell Davies’ Eight Songs for a Mad King in the UK and Canada; the male role in The Boy who lived down the Lane by Diana Soh at the Performer’s Voice Symposium in Singapore, and in Stephen Oliver’s A Man of Feeling; Barber’s Dover Beach; Finzi’s By Footpath and Style and Kagel’s …den 24.XII.1931 with The Warehouse Ensemble.
John has worked regularly with Counterpoise, a contemporary chamber ensemble dedicated to performing melodramas. With Counterpoise, he has performed works including John Casken’s Deadly Pleasures (Brighton Festival), Walton’s Facade and David Matthew’s Acteon. He performed the UK premiere of Wynton Marsalis’ A Fiddler’s Tale at the Forge in Camden and Strauss’ Enoch Arden, Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale and Walton’s Henry V.

In 2016/17, he will sing Colline, La boheme at Opera Holland Park, Eight songs for a Mad King with the Ossian Ensemble, reprise his role of 2nd Gunman in Kiss Me Kate at Welsh National Opera (co-production with Opera North) and sing Alidoro, La Cenerentola at Opera North.
John is Artistic Director of Charles Court Opera.
