Biography

Matthew graduated from Oxford University with a first-class BA in Music in 2019. As of September 2019, he will be studying for an MA in Musical Theatre (Music Direction and Coaching) at the Royal Academy of Music, and currently holds the Musicians’ Company Award for Music Direction in Musical Theatre (2019). A composer, he won the BBC Inspire Young Composers’ competition in 2014, was commissioned to write a piece for members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 2015, was shortlisted for the BBC Radio 3 Carol Competition in 2018, and in Oxford took part in the Cameron Mackintosh Musical Theatre Writing Programme 2016 led by Claude-Michel Schönberg.

Most notable credits as Music Director and Assistant Music Director (marked *) include: The Threepenny Opera (ad. Simon Stephens)(Oxford Playhouse), STOP – a new musical (Ed. Fringe), Sweet Charity* (Oxford Playhouse), Dogfight* (Pembroke College, Oxford) Merrily We Roll Along (Queen’s College, Oxford), The Pirates of Penzance (Papp) (Exmouth Pavilion), Godspell*(Exmouth Pavilion), and Anything Goes (Exmouth). He has also worked on numerous productions both in Oxford and back home in sunny Devon as a keyboard player, keyboard programmer, rehearsal pianist and arranger/orchestrator. Most notable credits in this capacity include: Made in Dagenham, Company, Aspects of Love, Crazy for You, Me and My Girl, Carousel, Barnum, Into the Woods, The Witches of Eastwick, Fame, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of The Opera, Sweeney Todd and Thoroughly Modern Millie. He also is an experienced oboist and cor anglais player, having played for many shows (Candide, Les Misérables and The Wizard of Oz to name a few) and in a variety of orchestras. Orchestral credits include: Oxford University Orchestra, Oxford University Wind Orchestra, Oxford University Sinfonietta and South West Youth Orchestra. He has plays percussion from time to time, sings regularly in his college choir, and also has been known to tread the boards.
